General Information of Iraq

Geography: Iraq is bordered by Jordan to the west, Syria to the northwest, Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, and Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to the south. Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (35 miles) on the northern Persian Gulf. The capital city, Baghdad is in the center-east of the country.

Climate: Most of Iraq has a hot arid climate. Summer temperatures average above 40 °C (104 °F) for most of the country and frequently exceed 48 °C (118.4 °F). Winter temperatures infrequently exceed 21 °C (69.8 °F) with maximums roughly 15 to 16 °C (59 to 60.8 °F) and night-time lows occasionally below freezing.

Economy: Iraq's economy is dominated by the oil sector, which has traditionally provided about 95% of foreign exchange earnings. Iraq has proven oil reserves of 143.1 billion barrels, the world's 2nd largest. Iraq's oil production is only about 2.5 million barrels per day.

Demographics: An April 2009 estimate of the total Iraqi population is 31,234,000. Around 75%–80% of Iraq's population is Arab; the other major ethnic groups are the Kurds at 15%–20%, the Assyrians, the Iraqi Turkmen and others (5%), who mostly live in the north and northeast of the country. Around 20,000 Marsh Arabs live in southern Iraq. The Iraqi population includes a community of around 30,000 Circassians, 20,000 Armenians, and a community of 2500 Chechens.

Arabic and Kurdish are official languages.

Karbala, Iraq

Karbala is one of the holiest places of the world located in current day Iraq. Geographically it is located about 100 km southwest of Baghdad, the capital city of Irag. It is at 32.61°N, 44.08°E. In the time of Imam Husain ibn Alī AS's life, the place was also known as al-Ghadiriyah, Naynawa, and Shathi'ul-Furaat, and many other names. The estimated population of this city in 2003 was around 572,300 people. Karbala is also known to be a compound word in Arabic. "Karb" means anxiety and torment while "bala" means trial or tribulation.

The city is one of Iraq's wealthiest, profiting both from religious visitors and agricultural produce, especially dates. It is made up of two districts, "Old Karbala," the religious centre, and "New Karbala," the residential district containing Islamic schools and government buildings.
At the centre of the old city is the Masjid Al-Husain AS, the tomb of Husain ibn Alī (AS)‎, the grandson of Rasulullah SA, by his daughter Maulatena Fatimah az-Zahra AS and Alī ibn Abi-Taalib AS.

Najaf, Iraq

Najaf is a city in Iraq about 160 km south of Baghdad. Its estimated population in 2008 is 560,000 people. It is the capital of Najaf Governorate. It is widely considered the third holiest city of Shi'a Islam and the center of Shia political power in Iraq. The Najaf area is located 30 km south of the ancient city of Babylon and 400 km north of the ancient Biblical city of Ur. The city itself was reputedly founded in 791 by the Abbasid Caliph Harūn ar-Rashīd, as a shrine to Ali ibn Abi Talib.

Najaf-e-Ashraf Karbala Moalla are cities, blessed with the qadam mubarak of Anbiya (SA), Awsiya (SA), Panjatan Pak (SA), Aimmat Tahereen (AS) and Doat Mutlaqeen (RA). Especially the 17th ziyarat safar of SYEDNA MOHAMMED BURHANUDDIN (TUS), by which today the importance of Imam Husain's (AS) ziyarat barakat has wide spreaded within mumineen worlwide.

Faiz-e-Husaini in Iraq was established by 48th Dai-il-Mutlaq, Syedna Abdulhusain Husamuddin (RA) for the sole purpose of khidmat of zaereen keram. The location is very near by walking to the Qubba Mubaraka of Moulana Abbas (AS). With these passing years, there is a steady development in its management. With the dua of SYEDNA MOHAMMED BURHANUDDIN (TUS) and as per his wish, today the management is keeping pace in the quality of khidmat. Currently, Shehzada Qaidjohar bs Ezzuddin (DM) is the main guidance and under whose patronage it has reached heights in quality management. Though there is an increase in count of zaereen keram each year, the efforts are to provide them much better khidmat than what with had previously.
